Actor Armie Hammer has enraged the internet by making a joke on Twitter that was aimed at people capitalizing on the death of Stan Lee for their own cachet.
On Monday, Hamer tweeted, “So touched by all of the celebrities posting pictures of themselves with Stan Lee… no better way to commemorate an absolute legend than putting up a picture of yourself."
Predictably, most people did not understand his point and flew into a tizzy. People leapt to the defense of the celebrities in question, namely Tom Hardy, The Rock, Evangeline Lilly and Mark Hamill. It wasn't just angry fans, either. One journalist replied with "They... worked with him...?"
"Me.... too...?" Hammer replied.
The fact that Hammer's point was lost on so many people is a testament to how incisive his original tweet was. One responder asked, "what else u supposed to do when someone dies," to which Hammer responded, "If your answer is 'post a selfie' then I think we need a cultural revamp across the board."
“If Stan impacted your life (ie. All of our lives) with his work, post his work that touched you the most. Posting a selfie makes his death about you and how cool you felt taking a picture with him.”
