The Worst Fashion Trends in Human History We’re Glad Are Over

Fashion is hard. The hard part is not trying too hard. Or not letting on exactly how hard you’re trying to look like you’re not trying too hard. There have been a lot of missteps along the journey to modern fashion, and we continue to stumble. These are some of the worst, that have thankfully been relegated to the scrap pile of history (for now).

Ganguro was an interesting but unsightly episode in Japanese fashion. It started in the mid-90s and lasted until the early 2000’s. Traditional Japanese beauty standards favor a neutral appearance, with pale skin, dark hair and undetectable makeup. Girls in the Shibuya and Ikebukuro districts of Tokyo went the opposite direction, applying garish, unnatural makeup, dying their hair blonde and dressing like Paris Hilton.
