Forbes Magazine recently named George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, as the wealthiest celebrity in the United States. The writer and director has been at the helm of the franchise since he started it with A New Hope.
His net worth is estimated to be $5.4 billion. The majority of that comes from a #$4 billion payout he got when Disney bought Lucasfilm, and all the Star Wars intellectual property along with it.
Despite somewhat waning popularity, Star Wars continues to be a cash cow for Disney. The Star Wars brand has its tentacles in virtually every corner of culture, and has been merchandised in every conceivable way. Multiple new Star Wars films are set to come out as well.
Lucas is so wealthy that his riches far surpass those of even Oprah ($2.8 billion) and Spielberg ($3.7 billion).
The ten celebrities on the list have combined estimated net worth of $18.7 billion.
Obviously, this is a lot of money. Now compare to the net worth of Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon - $160 billion. Or Bill Gates, at $93.9 billion. Or Mark Zuckerberg, at $53.8 billion.
