Shaun White, famous snowboarder, has run afoul of the Special Olympics with his Simple Jack Halloween costume. Simple Jack, a mentally handicapped man played by Ben Stiller's pompous actor character in Tropic Thunder, is not, apparently, considered fair play for costumes. At the time of Tropic Thunder's release, advocacy groups protested the film over Simple Jack.
Soeren Palumbo, the senior director of global youth engagement at the Special Olympics, was vocal about White's costume photo, posted to Instagram.
"We are truly disappointed that Shaun White, an acclaimed Olympian, would choose this costume which is so offensive and causes so much pain. Disability is not a joke nor should it be a punchline. We hope that Shaun White and others learn that this just continues stigma, stereotypes and discrimination."
He wasn't alone - many of White's Instagram followers were angered by the costume.
White responded on Tuesday night, saying on Instagram that he owed "everyone in the Special Olympics community an apology."
If White has found a replacement costume, he has not publicized it.
